Rules for IIM UG Admissions May Change; Discussions Underway for a Common Entrance Test
A proposal is currently under consideration to introduce a common entrance test—modeled after the CAT—for admission to undergraduate courses at the country’s prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). This move aims to simplify the currently complex selection process.
The prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are contemplating significant changes to their undergraduate (UG) admission processes. Documents obtained via the Right to Information (RTI) on September 15, 2026, reveal that the IIMs are collectively discussing the creation of a common entrance test for UG programs and a centralized counseling platform for MBA admissions. This proposal was tabled during a meeting of the IIM Coordination Forum held on May 14, 2026, which was chaired by the then Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan.
Why is a Common Test Needed?
Currently, 13 of the country’s 22 IIMs—including institutes such as Indore, Rohtak, Ranchi, Jammu, Bodh Gaya, Amritsar, and Shillong—offer undergraduate programs. However, these institutes employ more than ten different admission methods, creating significant confusion for students who must take separate exams for each IIM. Former Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan himself had remarked that having so many distinct entrance exams for similar courses is not ideal and should be avoided.
Changes Planned for MBA Counseling Too
Efforts are underway to streamline not only UG admissions but also the counseling process for MBA programs. By the end of July 2026, IIM Mumbai submitted a prototype for a common digital counseling platform to the Ministry of Education. The objective is to spare students the hassle of booking seats at multiple IIMs and paying hefty non-refundable fees—a process that currently forces them to navigate various admission procedures and incur financial losses.
Uniform Fee Refund Rules to be Formulated
It was also decided during the meeting that, starting from the 2026-27 academic session, a uniform fee-refund policy based on UGC guidelines would be implemented across all IIMs. Currently, students face significant difficulties due to varying fee refund rules among different IIMs—particularly when a student wishes to give up a seat at one IIM to enroll in another.
How Does Undergraduate Admission Work Currently?
At present, institutions like IIM Bangalore conduct their own separate undergraduate entrance tests, covering sections such as Quantitative Aptitude, Logical Reasoning, and Verbal Ability. Similarly, IIM Indore’s IPMT exam is also highly popular. Since each IIM has its own exam pattern, schedule, and application process, students often struggle with filling out forms and preparing for these exams.
What Could Be the Future Impact?
If this proposal is implemented, students will eventually need to take only a single common test for admission to undergraduate management courses; they will then be able to apply to various IIMs based on their scores. This would not only save students time and money but also make the admission process more transparent and streamlined. However, as the proposal is currently in the preliminary discussion stage, it may take some time before it is actually implemented.
