UK announces new 'safe and legal' refugee resettlement routes, includes India among seven countries
The UK government has announced new resettlement pathways for refugees living outside their home countries, including in India. The move is part of efforts to discourage illegal migration through dangerous routes, such as small-boat crossings of the English Channel.
The new routes will initially cover seven countries, including India, Bangladesh, Egypt, Kenya, Malaysia, Pakistan and Uganda, Home Office Minister for Border Security and Asylum Anna Turley told the House of Commons on Thursday, as cited by PTI.

The applicants must be outside their country of nationality and must have been registered with the relevant authorities or the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in one of the seven countries before October 1, 2026, to qualify.
The first arrivals under the scheme are expected in autumn 2027. The initiative will include community sponsorship, refugee work and refugee study routes, allowing eligible refugees to settle in the UK with support from local communities, universities and employers.

Turley said the government would work with the UNHCR to identify refugees with genuine protection needs. All applicants will have to clear identity, security and eligibility checks and secure suitable sponsorship arrangements before being granted refugee status.
The number of arrivals will be capped and linked to the capacity of communities to sponsor refugees. The government expects the combined arrivals under the new pathways and the existing UK resettlement scheme to initially run into the hundreds before increasing to the low thousands as illegal migration declines, Turley told MPs.
Applications from organisations seeking accreditation as lead sponsors for the community sponsorship and refugee study routes opened this week. Applications for the refugee work route are expected to open in spring 2027.
Lead sponsors will act as intermediaries between the Home Office and sponsor groups. Their responsibilities will include assessing sponsorship arrangements, processing applications and providing ongoing support to participating groups.
Organisations seeking accreditation must be registered UK charities or community interest companies operating in Britain. They must also demonstrate that they have the necessary resources, networks and procedures to carry out the role.
All refugees selected under the new routes will have to undergo biometric screening, criminality checks and health assessments before travelling to the UK.
