5 Anime Characters Who Were Too Powerful to Defeat and Had to Be Sealed

In anime, battles are often decided by strength, strategy and the ability to outlast an opponent. However, some characters possess such overwhelming powers that defeating them through conventional combat becomes nearly impossible. In these situations, sealing techniques offer an alternative way to neutralise a dangerous enemy without having to destroy them.

Across popular series, powerful beings have been imprisoned inside magical objects, sealed within other dimensions or restrained through advanced supernatural techniques. While some seals remain intact for centuries, others are eventually broken, forcing a new generation of heroes to confront the same threat.

Here are five anime characters whose immense power made sealing a practical or necessary solution.

1. Majin Buu Was Sealed Away Long Before the Dragon Ball Z Saga

Majin Buu is one of the most unpredictable and destructive beings in the Dragon Ball universe. His unusual body, extraordinary regeneration and ability to transform make him extremely difficult to defeat permanently. Even the strongest warriors struggle to contain him, with Kid Buu ultimately requiring Goku’s Super Spirit Bomb to be destroyed.

Long before the events of Dragon Ball Z, the wizard Bibidi used a magical container to imprison Buu. The creature had already destroyed numerous worlds, but Bibidi could not always control his violent creation. Sealing Buu inside a magical sphere became a way to restrain him whenever necessary.

Bibidi eventually brought the sealed container to Earth. However, before he could release Buu, he was defeated by the Supreme Kai. The creature remained imprisoned until Bibidi’s son, Babidi, later found the container and gathered enough energy to revive him.

Given Buu’s ability to survive devastating attacks and recover from severe injuries, sealing him was one of the few methods capable of keeping him under control.

2. Kaguya Otsutsuki Had to Be Sealed Again in Naruto: Shippuden

Kaguya Otsutsuki was introduced in Naruto: Shippuden as one of the most powerful beings in the series. As the origin of chakra on Earth, she possessed immense reserves of energy, extraordinary healing abilities and the power to move between dimensions.

Her abilities placed her far beyond most shinobi, including Madara Uchiha. Rather than attempting to defeat her through ordinary combat, Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha were tasked with using a powerful sealing technique passed down by Hagoromo Otsutsuki.

Kaguya had previously been sealed by Hagoromo and his brother, Hamura, using the Six Paths: Chibaku Tensei. Their technique created a massive celestial body that became associated with the formation of the Moon.

Thousands of years later, Black Zetsu manipulated events to bring Kaguya back. Once she returned, Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, Kakashi and Obito worked together to create an opportunity for the final seal.

Naruto and Sasuke eventually used the Six Paths powers given to them by Hagoromo to seal Kaguya once again. The battle demonstrated that even the combined efforts of several powerful characters were not enough to overcome her directly. The heroes had to rely on precise teamwork and a specialised sealing technique to stop her.

3. Chaos Was Imprisoned Because Its Power Could Reshape the World

In the world of The Seven Deadly Sins and its sequel series The Four Knights of the Apocalypse, Chaos is presented as a primordial force connected to the creation of Britannia and several major races.

Unlike a conventional villain, Chaos is not simply a powerful warrior. It represents an almost limitless force capable of altering reality and creating new forms of life. Its influence is so significant that even the Supreme Deity and the Demon King joined forces to restrict it.

The two divine beings sealed Chaos away and reduced its active influence to a weaker entity known as the Mother of Chaos. This decision helped maintain a balance between the major powers of the world for thousands of years.

However, the danger associated with Chaos did not disappear completely. Merlin eventually helped awaken Arthur Pendragon as the new King of Chaos, allowing a portion of that immense power to return to the world.

Arthur’s ability to manipulate reality showed why Chaos had originally been confined. The storyline makes it clear that sealing such a force was not simply a response to defeat. It was an attempt to prevent a power capable of destabilising the entire world from remaining unrestricted.

4. Aizen Could Not Be Killed Easily in Bleach

Sosuke Aizen was already an exceptionally dangerous figure in Bleach before he used the Hogyoku to evolve beyond ordinary Shinigami limitations. His Zanpakuto, Kyoka Suigetsu, gave him access to complete hypnosis, allowing him to manipulate the senses of anyone affected by it.

After merging with the Hogyoku, Aizen gained an even greater level of power and became extremely difficult to kill. Ichigo Kurosaki eventually managed to overpower him by using the Final Getsuga Tensho, but defeating Aizen in battle did not immediately solve the problem.

Recognising that Aizen could not be reliably destroyed, Kisuke Urahara prepared a complicated sealing technique. The seal was concealed within a powerful Kido attack and activated after Aizen had been weakened sufficiently.

The technique successfully restrained Aizen, and he was sentenced to an extremely long period of imprisonment. However, the seal did not remain entirely untouched.

During the Quincy invasion, Captain-Commander Shunsui Kyoraku arranged for some of Aizen’s restraints to be removed so that his power could be used against the Wandenreich. This decision highlighted how difficult it was to keep Aizen contained, even after his defeat.

Aizen’s imprisonment was therefore not a simple victory. It was a carefully planned solution designed to control an enemy whose powers made permanent destruction almost impossible.

5. Jujutsu Kaisen Used Sealing to Contain Its Most Dangerous Powers

Jujutsu Kaisen features several characters whose abilities are so destructive that sealing became an important part of the story.

Ryomen Sukuna’s existence was preserved through twenty cursed fingers. After his death, his remains became powerful cursed objects that could not easily be destroyed. These fingers allowed Sukuna’s presence and cursed energy to survive long after his original body was gone. Although this process is not a conventional sealing technique, it functioned as a form of containment until the objects were consumed.

Satoru Gojo, meanwhile, was sealed through the Prison Realm during the Shibuya Incident. As the strongest modern jujutsu sorcerer, Gojo was considered too difficult to defeat directly by Kenjaku and the allied cursed spirits.

Kenjaku’s plan depended on distracting Gojo and keeping him within the Prison Realm’s activation range for the required period. The strategy also relied on psychological manipulation, particularly Kenjaku’s appearance in the body of Gojo’s former friend, Suguru Geto.

Once activated, the Prison Realm trapped Gojo inside a separate space. His immense strength and advanced techniques were of little use because the object was specifically designed to restrain its target rather than overpower them in a traditional fight.

Gojo’s allies later had to find a way to undo the seal, demonstrating how a single sealing technique could alter the balance of power across the entire jujutsu world.

Sealing techniques often play a crucial role in anime stories where physical strength is not enough to stop an overwhelming threat. Characters such as Majin Buu, Kaguya, Aizen and Gojo were not simply defeated through ordinary combat. Instead, their opponents had to rely on specialised methods to restrict their abilities and prevent further destruction.
