For someone who has faced loss, fame and relentless public scrutiny from a very young age, Janhvi Kapoor could be forgiven for turning cynical. Yet in an intimate conversation with Vogue India, the actor revealed a softer side, one that still believes in romance, family and the magic of simple joys.

From navigating the pressures of legacy to sharing her personal take on love and marriage, Janhvi offers rare insights into her life.

Growing Up in the Public Eye

Janhvi Kapoor was thrust into the limelight long before her acting debut. Childhood pictures with her late mother, Sridevi, became part of the public domain as social media culture exploded. Dealing with loss, grief, and constant paparazzi attention at such a tender age shaped her view of fame.

'Any girl growing up today will find it complicated with the kind of gaze that society has towards women. Then club the baggage of being my mother’s daughter, of always being scrutinised. It’s an exceptionally tough journey,' she said.

Coping with Privilege, Scrutiny and Empathy

Janhvi admits that while her privilege is often discussed, empathy has rarely come her way. Reflecting on the challenges she and her sister faced, she added:

'Where is this empathy? I want to see some of this empathy. Other people are cut a lot more slack. My sister and I have never let them see the cracks, and because of this, people have felt they can throw mud at us, that we are not really human.'

Sridevi’s Warning About the Industry

Her mother, legendary actress Sridevi, once cautioned Janhvi about the weight of comparisons:

'Your first film is not going to be compared to my first film, but to my 350th film. And that’s something that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.'

Views on Love and Marriage

Janhvi sees love and marriage through an old-school, romantic lens, even in today’s world of instant connections.

'It is almost impossible to fall in love now… But for me personally? I’m a hyper-romantic, devoted individual… I love the idea of creating a family life, a unit that is yours.'

Speaking about marriage, she revealed her simple dream:

'I know I want to get married in Tirupati. I definitely don’t want too many people there. I want it to be quick, I want the honeymoon to be very long.'

Image, Identity and Social Media

On the impact of filters, fillers, and curated beauty online, Janhvi had a clear message for young girls:

'As long as you feel good in your skin, do whatever works for you. Stop judging others, live and let live. And do what makes you happy and comfortable and enjoy yourself. It really doesn’t have to be that serious or that deep.'
