From the Silver Screen to the Red Carpet: Karan Johar Celebrates Indian Culture at Met Gala 2026
Filmmaker Karan Johar made a regal debut at the Met Gala in an ensemble inspired by the paintings of legendary Indian artist Raja Ravi Varma. Johar, a noted fashion enthusiast, collaborated with his longtime friend and designer Manish Malhotra to create the historic outfit. He wore a heavily embroidered black bandhgala shirt paired with black trousers. However, the absolute highlight of his look was the majestic cape, crafted with artisanal mastery to bring the artistic world of Raja Ravi Varma to life on textile.
The inspiration for the outfit drew from Varma’s most celebrated works, including Hamsa Damayanti, Kadambari, and Arjuna and Subhadra. The ensemble brought together several distinct art forms, utilizing a bevy of techniques such as hand painting, 3D sculpting, quilting, and traditional zardozi embroidery to create a truly layered masterpiece.
Painting Feelings Through Fashion
Reflecting on the choice of inspiration, Johar shared his thoughts in an Instagram post: “Inspired by the art of Raja Ravi Varma. Raja Ravi Varma felt right because his work does something I’ve always tried to do in cinema. He painted feelings.” This emotional connection between the artist’s brushstrokes and Johar’s cinematic storytelling provided the perfect foundation for his first-ever appearance at the event.
A Collaboration of Vision and Gratitude
Johar also praised his collaborator, stating, “And who better than my oldest partner in crime and fashion to help me bring this to life other than Manish Malhotra. To bring our Indian culture to the global stage with the vision of couture and gratitude woven together, is an art form in itself which he has mastered. You made me feel like a canvas for your art, thank you.”
The Met Gala red carpet witnessed a flurry of art-inspired looks this year, as the dress code was “Fashion is Art.” Alongside Karan Johar, other notable Indian figures attended the New York City event on May 4, including Isha Ambani, Natasha Poonawalla, Sudha Reddy, and Jaipur royal siblings Gauravi Kumari and Sawai Padmanabh Singh. Many, including Ambani, carried literal sculptures to the red carpet to further emphasize the intersection of creativity and style.
