Naseeruddin Shah Encourages Filmmakers to Focus on Artistic Values, Not Profit
Veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah recently expressed his dismay with Hindi cinema at a recent event. He emphasized the need for filmmakers to prioritize creativity over financial gains, believing that this shift is essential for the improvement of Hindi films. Shah criticized the repetitive nature of movies produced over the past century and admitted to refraining from watching films due to his dissatisfaction with current trends and the lack of substance. He questioned the celebration of Hindi cinema's long history when it lacks innovation, expressing concern that audiences may lose interest in recycled narratives.
“It really disappoints me that we take pride in saying Hindi cinema is 100 years old but we have been making the same films. I have stopped watching Hindi films, I don’t like them at all,” he said.
The seasoned actor also offered guidance to filmmakers, emphasizing that Hindi cinema can only reclaim its past grandeur if filmmakers move beyond mere profit-making. He urged serious filmmakers to depict contemporary reality responsibly to steer clear of legal entanglements or controversies. “There is hope for Hindi cinema only if we stop seeing them as a means to make money. But I feel it’s too late now. There is no solution any more because the films that are being watched by thousands will keep being produced and people will keep watching them, God knows till when. So those who want to make serious films, it’s their responsibility to show today’s reality and in such a way that they don’t get a fatwa, or the ED doesn’t come knocking on their doors,” Shah added.
Naseeruddin Shah is set to star alongside Emraan Hashmi, Mahima Makwana, Mouni Roy, Rajeev Khandelwal, Vijay Raaz, and Shriya Saran in the upcoming series "Showtime." The show, scheduled to air on Disney+ Hotstar, is directed by Mihir Desai and Archit Kumar. "Showtime" promises to explore the hidden realm behind the camera, offering viewers a glimpse into the unseen aspects of the entertainment industry.
