While she’s long been a familiar face in Marathi cinema and theatre, Girija has also made her mark in Hindi films and OTT shows. Her body of work includes Taare Zameen Par, Shor in the City, Ladies Special, Jawan, and Inspector Zende. But this week, the internet only had one question “Who’s the woman in the blue saree?”

Social media flooded with admiration and curiosity. One post read, “Marathi actress #GirijaOak has suddenly become one of the most talked-about names on Twitter after a photo of her in a blue saree and sleeveless blouse went viral.” Another user asked, “Who’s this in the blue saree? Seen her trending drop the name if you know.” A fan even described her as “the prominent and most beautiful Marathi actress.”

Born on December 27, 1987, in Nagpur, Girija Oak is the daughter of veteran actor Girish Oak and homemaker Padmashree Phatak. She is married to filmmaker Suhrud Godbole. A biotechnology graduate from Thakur College, Mumbai, Girija also studied business management and attended theatre workshops before stepping into acting.

Recalling the viral classroom moment, Girija once said her teacher left everyone confused when he asked about “babes.” She laughed as she shared, “There are two types of babes. Transitional babes and longitudinal babes.” The class later realized he was referring to “waves.”

As her popularity skyrocketed online, Girija told Hindustan Times, “I am amused! I was in rehearsals for my play and couldn’t take calls.” She also shared that some online users took things too far. “Suddenly, all my friends were messaging me, ‘Do you know what’s happening on X?’ One sent me a post debating if it was (actor) Priya Bapat or me! Then my devar told me some cheap handles picked up my pictures and there was a whole 'bhabhi lover' scene happening. Some pages sexualised me. But Marathi fans said, 'You've only just discovered her! We've known her for years,’” she said.

Despite the frenzy, Girija remains grounded, adding, “The work I do is here to stay. If people discover my work now, that makes me happy.”

She was last seen alongside Manoj Bajpayee in Inspector Zende and will next appear in Therapy Sherapy, where she shares screen space with Gulshan Devaiah.
