There is something unusual about Rakesh Roshan ’s filmography that Bollywood fans have noticed for decades. From Khudgarz and Khoon Bhari Maang to Karan Arjun, Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, Koi... Mil Gaya and Krrish, the letter K appears again and again.

At first, it may look like a coincidence. But behind this unusual pattern is a story involving a fan's letter, a string of successful films and Rakesh Roshan's growing belief in the power of the alphabet.

It Started With a Fan's Letter

The story reportedly goes back to the period when Rakesh Roshan was building his career as a filmmaker.

According to a Times of India report, while he was working on Jaag Utha Insan, a fan wrote to Roshan suggesting that he should name his films with the letter K. Roshan initially ignored the suggestion.

Interestingly, Jaag Utha Insan and his next film, Bhagwan Dada, did not perform well. The filmmaker then revisited the fan's letter and looked back at his own filmography.

What he noticed was intriguing.

Some of his successful films had titles beginning with K, including Khubsurat, Khatta Meetha and Kaamchor.

That coincidence appears to have changed his approach to film titles.

Then Came Khudgarz

The K connection became more firmly associated with Rakesh Roshan after Khudgarz became a success.

From there, the filmmaker increasingly adopted K as his preferred starting letter for his films. His subsequent titles included Khoon Bhari Maang, Kishen Kanhaiya and Karan Arjun.

The pattern was no longer something audiences could easily overlook.

And then came the film that would make the K connection even more famous.

Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai Changed Everything

In 2000, Rakesh Roshan introduced his son Hrithik Roshan as a leading man in Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai.

The film became a major success and turned Hrithik into one of the biggest new stars in Hindi cinema almost overnight. The film also became closely associated with the unusual spelling of its title.

Reports on Bollywood numerology have noted that Rakesh Roshan agreed to changes in the spelling of Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai as part of numerological calculations.

The success only strengthened the belief surrounding the K factor.

K Was Not Just a One-Time Experiment

After Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai, Rakesh Roshan continued with the same pattern.

Koi... Mil Gaya arrived in 2003 and introduced audiences to Rohit Mehra and the alien Jadoo. The film became an important turning point in Hrithik Roshan's career and eventually led to the superhero franchise beginning with Krrish.

Then came Krrish in 2006, followed by Krrish 3 in 2013.

The Indian Express describes the recurring K pattern as a distinctive feature of Rakesh Roshan's directorial career, covering films from Khudgarz through the Krrish franchise.

Did Rakesh Roshan Believe K Was Lucky?

Rakesh Roshan himself has previously spoken about his decision to stick with the letter.

In a Times of India report, he explained that because so many of his K-titled films had worked, he decided there was little reason to move away from the alphabet. The same report said that he had even registered around 50 titles beginning with K.

That makes the K connection more than a marketing gimmick. It became a personal filmmaking belief that continued across decades.

However, it is important to distinguish this from a guaranteed formula. A film title beginning with K does not automatically determine whether a movie will succeed. Even reports discussing Bollywood numerology have pointed out that adding letters or changing spellings cannot ensure a film's success.

From Karan Arjun to Krrish

The fascinating part is how many different genres have carried the K label.

Khoon Bhari Maang was a revenge thriller. Karan Arjun combined action, family drama and reincarnation. Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai was a romantic musical. Koi... Mil Gaya moved into science fiction, while Krrish transformed the story into a superhero franchise.

The letter remained the same, but the worlds created around it kept changing.

And Now Krrish 4

The K connection has survived into the next generation of the franchise.

Hrithik Roshan is returning as Krrish for Krrish 4, while also taking on the director's chair. The film is being produced by Yash Raj Films in association with Rakesh Roshan.

That means the K tradition is not simply a piece of Bollywood nostalgia. It remains connected to one of the Roshan family's biggest cinematic properties.

After decades of films beginning with the same letter, the question is no longer simply why Rakesh Roshan likes K.

The more intriguing question is this: how did one fan's suggestion turn into one of Bollywood's most recognisable title traditions?

For Rakesh Roshan, the answer appears to lie somewhere between coincidence, personal belief, numerology and the success of the films that followed.
