150 Years Of ‘Vande Mataram’: PM Modi Flags Off Year-Long Commemoration

India is set to mark a historic cultural milestone as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurates the year-long nationwide commemoration of 150 years of the National Song “Vande Mataram” today at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. The celebrations will continue until 7 November 2026, honouring the legacy and patriotic influence of this iconic anthem.

During the launch event, the Prime Minister will release a special commemorative stamp and coin, symbolising the beginning of a tribute year dedicated to the everlasting spirit of the nation. The ceremony will also witness a mass singing of the complete version of “Vande Mataram” at 9:50 a.m., synchronised across public spaces and organisations nationwide.

Ahead of the ceremony, PM Modi expressed his sentiments in a post on X, saying,


“Tomorrow, 7th November, is a momentous day for every Indian. We celebrate 150 glorious years of Vande Mataram , a stirring call that has inspired generations and ignited an undying spirit of patriotism across our nation…”

He added that the highlight of the programme would be the mass recital of the song, encouraging citizens to participate in honour of the historic occasion.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also shared his thoughts online, describing “Vande Mataram” as “the voice of India’s soul.”

He wrote, “‘Vande Mataram’ is not merely a collection of words; it is the voice of India’s soul… it united the nation, strengthened the consciousness of freedom, and awakened an unwavering spirit of dedication and sacrifice for the motherland.”

Shah urged people across the country to join the recital with their families to pass on its spirit to future generations.

History and Significance of “Vande Mataram”


The year 2025 marks 150 years since Bankim Chandra Chatterjee composed “Vande Mataram” on Akshaya Navami, 7 November 1875. The song first appeared in the renowned journal Bangadarshan, later becoming a core part of Chatterjee’s revolutionary novel Anandamath.


The song, invoking India as a powerful and divine Motherland, captured the essence of early nationalism, unity, and strength. During the freedom struggle, “Vande Mataram” became a symbolic chant of courage, inspiring countless freedom fighters and energising the independence movement.

Nationwide Celebrations Begin


The Delhi Legislative Assembly will also contribute to the celebrations with a special programme. A commemorative plaque will be unveiled by Speaker Vijender Gupta, followed by a patriotic cultural performance by Sahitya Kala Parishad artists. The building will glow in the Tricolour in the evening as a tribute to national pride.

Speaker Gupta stated, “‘Vande Mataram’ is not merely a song – it is the soul of India’s freedom movement and a timeless ode to our motherland.”

He added that the celebrations reaffirm India’s collective respect toward the ideals that shaped its identity.

Throughout the year, various cultural, historical, and musical programmes will be organised nationwide. The initiative aims to rekindle patriotic enthusiasm, especially among youth, while reminding every Indian of the unity and devotion symbolised by “Vande Mataram.”
