Bihar harassment case: NCW takes suo motu cognizance, demands immediate arrest of perpetrators
NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Monday took suo motu cognizance of harassment and assault of a young woman and her male companion in Bihar’s Jamui district, after a video of the incident surfaced on social media.
NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to Bihar director general of police, calling for the immediate registration of an FIR, identification and arrest of all those involved, and a time-bound and impartial investigation.
The commission has specifically asked authorities to use the video footage to identify the alleged perpetrators and take action against them.
The incident reportedly took place on the evening of September 19. Bihar Police said the woman and the man were allegedly stopped and harassed by a group of people by the roadside.
Jamui superintendent of police Bishwajeet Dayal said police traced the two individuals using the registration number of a vehicle visible in the video.
“Although the incident is two days old, no complaint was made before us by the boy or the girl till Sunday. Today, when the video went viral, we traced the victims,” news agency PTI quoted the SP saying.
Police subsequently registered a case at Jamui police station. Dayal said the victims had not named the alleged accused in their complaint, but investigators had identified several people from the video.
“The accused have not been named by them in the FIR that we lodged at Jamui police station, but we have identified about seven perpetrators with the help of the video clip, and they will soon be arrested,” Dayal said.
According to the SP, the young man and woman are friends and attend the same coaching institute. He did not disclose additional details, saying, “We must keep some information private”.
