CDSCO considers red warning symbol on cough syrups for children below 4

New Delhi: The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) is considering introducing a red warning symbol on cough syrup bottles to discourage their use in children below four years of age.

The move comes after the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) had already issued guidelines on the use of cough and cold syrups in children. The authorities are now considering making the precaution a mandatory requirement.

The proposed amendment to the Drugs Rules, 1945, may make it mandatory for cough syrup bottles to carry a red warning symbol along with a warning in red letters stating that the medicine should not be given to children below four years of age.
