Centre asks states to speed up shift from LPG cylinders to piped natural gas

New Delhi: The Union Petroleum Ministry has directed all states and Union Territories to speed up the process of shifting domestic cooking gas users from LPG cylinders to piped natural gas (PNG).

The ministry has sought administrative support at the district level to accelerate the process. It has also asked states and Union Territories to appoint special nodal officers to coordinate with gas distributors and oil marketing companies.

In a letter to the chief secretaries of states dated August 21, Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal said PNG is a safer, cleaner and more efficient cooking fuel.

According to the letter, PNG can play an important role in India’s energy transition. The shift could also help reduce the transportation burden involved in LPG distribution and provide greater convenience to consumers.
