Centre Orders Security Exercises in 244 Areas Amid Strained India-Pakistan Relations | All Locations Listed
As tensions continue to mount between India and Pakistan, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued instructions to conduct a large-scale civil defence mock drill across 244 districts in the country on May 7. The exercise, titled “Effective Civil Defence,” will be carried out in states like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal on Wednesday.
This decision comes in the wake of heightened security concerns after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals.
Following a key meeting at the MHA, a member of the National Disaster Management Authority stated, “We are evaluating our level of preparedness. Certain vulnerabilities have been detected and need immediate correction.”
The Home Ministry’s directive highlights the importance of strengthening civil defence mechanisms in both urban and rural settings. The goal of the May 7 drill is to reinforce emergency response strategies in light of “emerging and complex threats” linked to the evolving geopolitical climate.
All 244 designated civil defence districts have been instructed to participate, with a special focus on border states such as Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Gujarat. These regions are expected to undergo rigorous checks as part of the drill.
A major feature of the drill will involve testing the air raid alert systems in each district. “This system is the first line of defence in alerting civilians during emergencies. The Air Force triggers the warning, and it's crucial for each district to ensure their sirens are fully operational,” a civil defence officer told CNN-News18.
Additionally, the mock drill will include practice blackouts, simulating emergency scenarios where power cuts are necessary for security or strategic reasons.
This comprehensive drill was mandated amid ongoing high-level discussions led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is closely reviewing India’s possible counter-response to the Pahalgam terror incident.
