A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is moving towards the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts and is expected to cross between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur by Wednesday night, September 23. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough seas in several areas.
The system is expected to bring intense rainfall and strong winds to parts of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, with the weather impact extending to neighbouring inland states as it moves further west.
Districts including Ganjam, Gajapati, Koraput, Khurda and Malkangiri are facing severe weather conditions. Schools have also been shut in several districts as authorities prepare for heavy rain, waterlogging and possible evacuations.
Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram are among the areas on alert. Wind conditions along the north Andhra coast are expected to remain squally, with rough to very rough seas.
Emergency response teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas to assist with evacuations, waterlogging and other weather-related emergencies.
Keep an emergency kit ready with medicines, drinking water, non-perishable food, flashlights and extra batteries. Electrical appliances should be unplugged, and the main gas connection should be switched off where required.
