Delhi-NCR Braces For Severe Heatwave As IMD Issues Yellow Alert
Residents of Delhi-NCR are expected to face intense heatwave conditions this week, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a Yellow Alert for May 19 and 20. According to the weather department, temperatures in the national capital may rise up to 45 degrees Celsius over the next few days.
The IMD has predicted extremely hot and dry weather between May 18 and May 23, with maximum temperatures likely to remain between 42 and 45 degrees Celsius. Officials have warned that the scorching heat, combined with strong surface winds, could make outdoor conditions highly uncomfortable.
On Monday, Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to touch around 44 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature may settle near 26 degrees Celsius. Meteorologists have advised people to avoid direct exposure to sunlight during afternoon hours, as prolonged heat exposure may lead to dehydration and heatstroke.
According to the IMD, dry winds blowing at speeds of 10 to 30 kilometres per hour are likely to continue across Delhi-NCR in the coming days. Weather experts said these conditions could further worsen the impact of the heatwave.
Authorities have urged residents to take precautions, especially children, elderly people, and those with existing health issues. Experts have recommended drinking plenty of water, wearing light cotton clothes, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak daytime hours.
Delhi experienced severe heat on Sunday as temperatures climbed above the seasonal average. IMD data showed that the maximum temperature was recorded at 41.9 degrees Celsius, around 1.5 degrees above normal.
Meanwhile, the minimum temperature settled at 25.9 degrees Celsius, which was slightly below the seasonal average.
Apart from the rising heat, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘moderate’ category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 174 at 4 PM on Sunday.
Weather experts believe Delhi-NCR may continue to experience harsh summer conditions over the next several days, with no immediate relief expected.
The IMD has advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid stepping out unnecessarily during afternoon hours, and keep checking official weather updates regularly. Authorities stressed that awareness and precautionary measures will be important as the capital witnesses another spell of extreme summer heat.
