IMD Weather Alert: Heavy Rains, Storms and Dust Storms to Hit Multiple States This Week

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a nationwide weather alert for the week of 26 May to 1 June, cautioning against extremely heavy rains, thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and dust storms. These extreme weather events are expected to impact daily life and pose risks like flooding, landslides, and waterlogging across several states.

South India: Torrential Rains Grip Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu

• Kerala and Mahe: Brace for extremely heavy downpours at isolated spots from Monday onwards.
• Karnataka: Coastal and South Interior areas will be lashed by heavy to very heavy rain, especially early in the week. North Interior Karnataka faces similar conditions, increasing chances of flooding and landslides.
• Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal: The region will be hit by intense rainfall, with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds up to 50 kmph through the week.

Maharashtra & Goa: Wet Week Ahead

• Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada: Likely to see intermittent heavy to very heavy rainfall.
• Konkan & Goa (including Mumbai): Similar spells are forecast. Mumbai residents are advised to prepare for possible waterlogging during intense rains.

Eastern & Central India: Stormy Interludes

• Bihar & East Madhya Pradesh: Heavy showers expected on Monday with thundersqualls reaching speeds of 50–60 kmph.
• Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim: Expect a wet spell with thunderstorms and very heavy rainfall throughout the week.
• Telangana & Coastal Andhra Pradesh: Rainfall coupled with lightning and gusty winds is on the cards.

Northeast India: Continuous Showers, Storm Threats

• Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya: Isolated heavy rain early in the week, turning very heavy later. Sporadic thunderstorms, lightning, and hail are likely.
• Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura: These states can expect repeated heavy to very heavy showers.

Rajasthan & Gujarat: Heat, Dust and Rain

• West Rajasthan: Dust storms and heatwaves will dominate on Monday and Tuesday, with dusty conditions extending into June.
• Gujarat: Thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and isolated heavy rain may disrupt normal life.

Himachal Pradesh: Hailstorm Alert

• Tuesday may bring isolated hailstorms and thunderstorms, which could affect transport and damage standing crops.
