IMD Weather Alert: Yellow Warning for Delhi, Severe Heatwave in Gujarat and Maharashtra, Rain and Storms Likely in Multiple States

As India steps into a new month, weather conditions across the country are showing a dramatic mix of relief and warning. While several states have recently experienced rain and thunderstorms that have helped lower soaring temperatures, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has now forecast a varied weather pattern for the coming days. From rainfall and gusty winds in northern regions to intense heatwave conditions in western states, May is expected to bring both cooling showers and scorching temperatures.

Rain Brings Relief in Many Regions, More Weather Activity Ahead

Over the past week, multiple parts of India have seen rainfall and thunderstorms, offering much-needed respite from extreme summer heat. According to the latest IMD forecast , this changing weather trend is likely to continue in the near future. Several regions may witness more rain, lightning, thunderstorms and strong winds, while others could experience severe heatwave conditions.

The weather department has also indicated that overall rainfall during May is expected to remain above normal in most parts of the country. However, some areas in east, northeast and east-central India may receive below-average rainfall.

Southwest Monsoon Likely to Reach Andaman Around Mid-May

The arrival of the southwest monsoon is one of the most anticipated weather events in India, and early signs are now emerging. According to IMD’s latest projection, the monsoon is expected to make its initial progress over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands by mid-May.

Mohapatra said, “The monsoon may arrive over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands around May 14-16.”
This timeline is considered an important indicator for the broader monsoon season across India.

Delhi-NCR Weather: Yellow Alert for Rain and Thunderstorms

Residents of Delhi-NCR can expect a break from harsh summer conditions as the IMD has issued a yellow alert for the next two days. The alert signals possible weather disturbances, including rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds.

“An IMD official stated, “A spell of very light to light rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds of 30-40 km/h, gusting up to 50 km/h, is likely to occur on Sunday.”

For Sunday, Delhi’s maximum temperature is expected to stay between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures may hover around 26 to 28 degrees Celsius.

Western Disturbance to Keep Delhi Cooler

Weather experts believe that a fresh western disturbance may continue to influence northwestern India, keeping temperatures in check for a few more days.

Mahesh Palawat, vice president of Skymet, said, ” A fresh western disturbance is expected to influence the region in the coming days, leading to a cyclonic circulation over adjoining areas. Light rain might occur in parts of the city for the next few days, and there is no possibility of a heatwave at least for the next week.”

This means Delhi residents are unlikely to face heatwave conditions immediately, unlike several other parts of the country.

Gujarat and Maharashtra on Heatwave Watch

While northern India may enjoy temporary weather relief, western states like Gujarat and Maharashtra are likely to face above-normal heatwave days throughout May. IMD has specifically warned that these regions, along with some foothill areas of the Himalayas and parts of the east coast, may witness unusually high temperatures.
The department’s latest forecast suggests that prolonged hot weather could intensify in these zones, making precautionary measures essential.

What to Expect This May

The month of May is shaping up to be a season of contrasting weather patterns across India:

  • Above-normal rainfall in most parts of India
  • Below-normal rain in select eastern and northeastern areas
  • Monsoon likely over Andaman and Nicobar Islands by May 14-16
  • Rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds in Delhi-NCR
  • Heatwave warnings for Gujarat, Maharashtra, Himalayan foothills and east coast states

India’s weather in May is expected to remain highly dynamic, with rain bringing relief to some regions while dangerous heatwave conditions grip others. As monsoon preparations begin and regional forecasts evolve, staying updated with IMD advisories will be crucial for managing travel, health and daily activities.
