First Indian Bullet Train B28 To Launch By 2027
India is on the verge of a high-speed rail revolution with the introduction of its first indigenous bullet train, the B28, scheduled for 2027. This ambitious project, commissioned by the Indian government, is a testament to India’s push for self-reliance in rail technology under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
B28 Train: Specifications and Features
The B28 bullet train is being developed by BEML Bengaluru in collaboration with ICF Chennai. Designed to reach a test speed of 280 kmph and an operational speed of 250 kmph, the B28 will redefine travel comfort in India. The 8-car trainsets will feature fully air-conditioned chair car seating with rotatable and reclining seats, offering passengers a world-class travel experience.
Key Specs:
Timeline and Trial Runs
The first two prototype B28 trainsets are expected to be completed by March 2027, followed by rigorous oscillation trials and safety tests. The inaugural run is slated for the Surat-Vapi section in August 2027, making it India’s first homegrown bullet train ready for commercial operations.
India’s Path to High-Speed Rail Self-Reliance
The B28 project marks a departure from reliance on foreign bullet train technology like Japan’s Shinkansen. Future high-speed corridors, including Chennai-Bengaluru and Delhi-Varanasi, are expected to leverage India’s domestic expertise. The success of B28 will pave the way for the B35, an even faster train designed for 350 kmph, further strengthening India’s position in high-speed rail technology.
Economic and Technological Significance
Beyond speed, the B28 represents a major victory for Indian manufacturing. It will boost domestic production, provide jobs in rail technology, and showcase India’s engineering prowess on a global stage. With home-grown innovation at the core, the B28 is more than a train, it’s a symbol of India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
