New Delhi, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian Navy is set to enhance its maritime capabilities with the construction of eight state-of-the-art corvettes. The Ministry of Defence has finalized contracts worth ₹53,866.50 crore with Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for this project. On November 2, contracts were signed at the Ministry of Defence's Karyalay Bhawan-2 in New Delhi, in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
These next-generation corvettes will be equipped with advanced missiles, weapons, and sensor systems. They will enable the Navy to effectively address threats from the air, surface, and underwater. The addition of these warships is expected to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of the Navy. They will play a crucial role in securing maritime trade routes, targeting enemy vessels, and detecting submarines. Furthermore, these ships will strengthen coastal security, conduct military operations in shallow waters, and maintain continuous surveillance in maritime areas.
The deployment of these corvettes will bolster the Indian Navy's presence and monitoring capabilities at sea. The selection of manufacturing companies was made through a competitive process. This project marks the first instance where warships based on indigenous designs by the Indian Navy will be constructed by public sector enterprises in the defense sector. According to the Ministry of Defence, GRSE, located in Kolkata, will build five of the warships, while Goa Shipyard Limited will construct three.
Notably, the design of all these warships will be prepared by the Indian Navy itself, with construction carried out by domestic public sector enterprises. The project is expected to benefit not only the Navy's combat capabilities but also significantly boost the indigenous shipbuilding industry. The initiative will involve collaboration between public sector defense enterprises, private shipyards, Indian industrial partners, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
This partnership is expected to strengthen cooperation and technical capabilities among industries related to shipbuilding in India. The Ministry of Defence anticipates that this project will create substantial employment opportunities over the next decade, generating approximately 7.2 million person-days of employment in shipyards and about 4.6 million person-days in supporting industries and the MSME sector. Overall, the project is expected to generate millions of person-days of employment.
It will utilize domestically manufactured equipment and materials, indigenous technology, and skilled human resources from the country. This approach will help reduce foreign dependence in defense production and strengthen domestic industries. The construction of these eight new corvettes will not only enhance the Indian Navy's strength but also serve as a significant example of India's indigenous capabilities in warship design and construction. This initiative represents a crucial step towards self-reliance in defense production and advancing the 'Make in India' initiative.
