Justice Ravindra Vitthalrao Ghuge Sworn in as 45th Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court

Kolkata, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : Justice Ravindra Vitthalrao Ghuge was sworn in as the 45th Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court during a formal ceremony held at the court premises on Wednesday. The oath was administered by West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi, with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose, and senior members of the state cabinet in attendance.The ceremony was also graced by both former and current judges from various high courts. This appointment fills the position that became vacant following the retirement of former Chief Justice T.S. Shivagnanam. During the interim, Acting Chief Justice Tapobrata Chakraborty had been managing the court's judicial functions, while calls for a permanent chief justice were growing. The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, made the recommendations for this appointment.On August 6, the Collegium proposed Justice Ghuge's elevation to the permanent chief justice role, which the government approved on September 5. Central Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal confirmed via social media that the President had granted approval for Justice Ghuge's appointment after consulting with the Chief Justice, exercising powers conferred by the Indian Constitution. Justice Ghuge began his legal career as an advocate in 1990. He has represented over 2,000 cases, primarily advocating for labor unions, while also acting for various industrial organizations and multinational companies.From 2005 to 2008, he served as a contributory professor for the PG LLM course at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University (BAMU). Additionally, he held the position of Secretary for the Bar Association of Industrial Lawyers for five years and served as its President from July 2010 to December 2011.
