LPG Cylinder Prices Hiked by ₹50 for All Consumers, Ujjwala Beneficiaries Also Affected

In a move set to affect kitchen budgets nationwide, the Indian government has raised the price of domestic LPG cylinders by ₹50. This revision applies to all consumers, including beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), and comes into effect from April 9, 2025.

Price Hike Hits All Users Equally

• Ujjwala beneficiaries , who were paying ₹503 per cylinder in February 2025, will now pay ₹553.
• Regular domestic consumers will also face a ₹50 increase on each cylinder.
• This is the first price hike for Ujjwala users in recent months, following a period of steady subsidies.

Fueling the Decision: Global LPG Surge

• The government attributes the price hike to a steep 63% surge in global LPG prices — rising from $385/MT in July 2023 to $629/MT in February 2025.

• Despite the global rise, the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) have reportedly absorbed significant losses, amounting to over ₹41,000 crore in FY25.

Ujjwala Scheme Continues to Expand

• As of March 1, 2025, India has over 10.33 crore Ujjwala beneficiaries out of a total 32.94 crore active domestic LPG connections.

• A fourth phase of the scheme was greenlit in October 2024, though more than 26 lakh applications are still pending.

What It Means for Households

While the government stresses that the revision was necessary due to global price pressures, households - particularly those relying on subsidized cooking gas - will now need to stretch their budgets further to accommodate the increased cost.
