Namibian Cheetah Gaurav Dies During Treatment at Kuno National Park

Kuno National Park, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Gaurav, a Namibian cheetah brought to India, died on Monday during treatment at Kuno National Park. The cheetah, over ten years old, was rescued from the wild on September 12. Officials reported that he appeared weak and lethargic, prompting wildlife veterinarians to examine him. The examination revealed that Gaurav was in a critical condition, showing signs of severe dehydration and muscle damage.Given his deteriorating health, he was placed in a quarantine facility in Palpur for intensive care. Initial tests suggested the possibility of an underlying chronic illness. A team of veterinarians monitored his health closely and provided necessary treatments. Despite ongoing care, Gaurav's condition did not improve as hoped. He passed away around 4 PM on Monday. The exact cause of death remains unclear, with a post-mortem and analysis of samples expected to provide more information.With Gaurav's passing, the population of cheetahs at Kuno National Park has decreased to 51, of which 36 were born in India. Currently, 16 cheetahs are roaming freely in the wild. Including four cheetahs at Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary, the total number of cheetahs in India stands at 55. Gaurav's death marks another significant event in the monitoring and health management of cheetahs brought to India under Project Cheetah. The definitive cause of his death will be determined following the post-mortem results.
