At 75, Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to embrace a disciplined lifestyle, and fasting plays a central role. In a revealing conversation with Lex Fridman earlier this year. On turning 75 this September 17, he explained how prolonged fasting, with only water intake, enhances his sensory awareness.

Fasting goes beyond discipline

According to Modi, fasting intensifies sensory awareness. “Your senses smell, taste, touch become incredibly sharp,” he explained. Even the subtle aroma of water or tea becomes noticeable, and familiar flowers appear more vivid. This heightened perception, he says, helps the mind think clearly, explore new ideas, and break free from routine thought patterns.

When asked why he fastes and where his mind goes during it, he responded “Can you explain why you fast and where your mind goes when you fast?” PM Modi said , “All your senses, especially the sense of smell, touch, taste, become so aware that you can even smell the water. If you've ever drunk water before, you wouldn't have experienced the smell. If someone passes by you with a cup of tea, you can smell the tea, the coffee. If you've seen a small flower before, you'll see it again today. You can recognise it a lot. That means all your senses become very active all of a sudden, and their capability to absorb and respond to things increases manifold. Secondly, I've experienced that your thoughts give a lot of sharpness and novelty. You're out of the box. I don't know about others, but this is my experience.”

PM Modi Opened Up About His Fasting Practices

PM Modi follows several traditional fasting practices. During Chaturmas, the four-month fasting period from mid-June to Diwali: “During this time, I eat only one meal within 24 hours.”

For Navratri, observed twice a year, his discipline is even stricter. In the September celebration, he fasts entirely, consuming only hot water for nine days. “Drinking hot water has always been a part of my daily routine, and over time, my lifestyle naturally adapted to this habit,” he shared.

During Chaitra Navratri in spring, he eats just one type of fruit once a day for nine days. “If I choose papaya, then for all nine days, I won’t touch anything else just papaya,” he added.

For Modi, fasting is not a ritual it’s a tool for self-control, awareness, and clarity. His experience shows how tradition, when practiced mindfully, can offer both physical strength and mental sharpness.
