The Supreme Court has ruled that the Bar Council of India (BCI) and State Bar Councils do not have the authority to take disciplinary action against law students.

The court clarified that such powers only vest with the parent institution or an authority prescribed under regulations or bylaws governing these institutions.

The ruling came while hearing a writ petition filed by two alumni of NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, Mihira Sood and Abhishek Tiwari.
