Passenger Arrested at Howrah Station with ₹67 Lakh in Cash

Howrah, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : A passenger was apprehended at Howrah Station in West Bengal with a staggering ₹67 lakh in cash, police reported on Monday. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) arrested Sujit Kale, a resident of Maharashtra, after he failed to provide satisfactory explanations regarding the source of his money. The arrest occurred during a routine patrol at the New Complex of Howrah Station on Sunday night.RPF officers noticed Kale's suspicious behavior, prompting them to question him. When his responses raised further concerns, they searched his bag, uncovering bundles of cash totaling ₹67 lakh. Kale, hailing from Solapur in Maharashtra, claimed to own a shop in the Gaya Township area. He stated that he had traveled to Howrah on the Mumbai Mail that night to purchase gold and silver from Burrabazar in Kolkata. However, his explanations did not convince the RPF. Authorities noted that Kale could not identify the source of the cash and failed to produce any documentation to justify the amount.He was subsequently arrested, and the Income Tax Department was notified. Sources indicated that both the seized money and Kale would be handed over to the Income Tax Department. In light of the upcoming Durga Puja festival and the by-elections scheduled for October 6 in Nandigram and Rejinagar, authorities have intensified surveillance at railway and metro stations. Special checks are also being conducted on highways to prevent cash movement in election areas.
