PM Modi Shares Ancient Wisdom on Religions Role in Human Progress
New Delhi, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently took to the social media platform X to share an inspiring Sanskrit verse that conveys a message of welfare and progress through religion. The verse highlights the virtues of forgiveness, knowledge, and non-violence. The Sanskrit shloka shared by the Prime Minister states, “एको धर्मः परं श्रेयः क्षमैका शान्तिरुत्तमा.
विद्यैका परमा तृप्तिरहिंसैका सुखावहा॥” This translates to the idea that religion guides humanity towards welfare and advancement. It suggests that forgiveness is the highest means of mental peace, knowledge is the foundation of true satisfaction, and non-violence brings lasting happiness to the world. By embodying these qualities, individuals can lead lives that are noble, peaceful, and joyful. This verse is derived from the Mahabharata, specifically from Vidur Neeti (Udyog Parva, Chapter 33, Verse 48).It was originally imparted by Mahatma Vidur to King Dhritarashtra of Hastinapur during a time of mental turmoil and attachment to his sons. Vidur enlightened him about the eternal truths of morality, duty, and life. The shloka discusses four of life's most significant and valuable truths. It emphasizes that the essence of religion is not confined to any sect or ritual but is rooted in duty, morality, and humanity. Regardless of wealth, fame, or power, the true guide and protector of a person is their adherence to righteousness and good deeds. This is the ultimate path to welfare in life. According to the verse, feelings of anger and revenge extinguish inner peace. Forgiving others liberates the mind from hatred and stress. Forgiveness is portrayed as a hallmark of courage and the most effective means to achieve mental tranquility. The verse also addresses the insatiable hunger for wealth, noting that the more one acquires, the greater the desire becomes. In contrast, knowledge dispels ignorance, fosters wisdom, and equips individuals to remain content and joyful in every circumstance.Lastly, it asserts that violence, hatred, and conflict breed fear, insecurity, and sorrow. In environments where non-violence and compassion thrive, love, brotherhood, and true happiness flourish within society and individual lives.
