Shahjahanpur: Man arrested for cooking meat over burning funeral pyre, two flee

Lucknow/Shahjahanpur: A shocking incident was reported in Uttar Pradesh’s Shahjahanpur, where a man was arrested for allegedly cooking meat over a burning funeral pyre at a cremation ground. Two others who were reportedly with him fled the spot.

The incident took place in Natthapur village under the Puwayan police station limits. Recently, a villager named Veerpal’s father had died.

After the last rites were performed at the cremation ground outside the village, the family members and villagers returned home.

On Sunday evening, Veerpal went to the cremation ground to check whether his father’s funeral pyre was burning properly. He was shocked to see three men placing a vessel over the burning pyre and cooking meat.

Veerpal immediately informed the police. Puwayan police reached the spot and detained one of the accused, identified as Surendra.

However, his two companions fled after seeing the police.

During questioning, Surendra reportedly told police that the three had been drinking alcohol near the cremation ground. After noticing the burning pyre, they decided to use its fire to cook meat while under the influence of alcohol.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Diksha Bhavre said Surendra was sent to judicial custody and has been lodged in jail. Police are searching for the other two accused and said they would be arrested soon.

The incident has caused anger among local villagers as it allegedly hurt the sentiments of the deceased’s family.
