Mother's Loan Leads To Alleged Kidnapping Of Minor Brothers
BENGALURU: A shocking case unfolded in Kaveripura as a woman and her daughter were apprehended for allegedly kidnapping their neighbors' two minor sons, aged 14 and 7, to settle a debt of Rs 85,000 . The incident came to light when the older boy managed to contact his father, Kiran (name changed), and sought help.
Kiran, a resident of Kaveripura, lodged a complaint against Nalini alias Kavitha, a 38-year-old garment firm employee, and her daughter at Kamakshipalya police on Feb 18. The accused had reportedly loaned the money to Kiran's wife, who had been missing since November 17 last year. Kiran was unaware of the transaction until he discovered that the accused had collected Rs 2,000 fortnightly from him towards loan repayment.
“Nalini has been arrested and she told us that she was not aware of the law. She had borrowed money and given it to the boys’ mother. She thought it was fine to recover the money by putting the children to work. Her daughter’s role is yet to be established,” stated a police officer. The two boys, studying in classes 9 and 2, went missing on December 9 last year. Initially, when Kiran approached the police, they speculated that his missing wife might have taken the children with her.
Kiran's search efforts proved futile as he scoured Dharmasthala, Siddaganga Mutt in Tumakuru, and relatives' homes. It was only on February 15 that he received a call from his older son, revealing that Nalini and her daughter had kidnapped them. The boys were being held at Nalini's father's house in Malebennur, Harihara taluk, Davanagere district.
The elder boy disclosed to his father that they were prohibited from using phones or interacting with neighbours. They were also coerced into working, with the older one at a provision store and the younger sibling assigned household chores. The children were allegedly subjected to physical abuse, and their earnings were confiscated by Nalini and her family.
Kiran, shocked by the revelation, coordinated with his elder son's colleague to rescue the children. The plan was executed on Feb 17 when the minors were discreetly brought to the bus stand at Harihar and safely returned home. The boys recounted to their father the threats they faced during the kidnapping, alleging that they were forcefully taken to Malebennur.
A senior police officer stated, “We have registered the case under IPC sections 363 (kidnap), 365 (kidnapping or abducting with intent to secretly and wrongfully confine a person) and section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act (cruelty to child).” The investigation is ongoing, shedding light on the harrowing ordeal the minors endured while kidnapped.
