The decision was finalised during a meeting of BJP’s newly elected candidates held in Kolkata. Senior party leaders proposed Suvendu Adhikari’s name for the chief minister’s post, which was approved through a voice vote by legislators.
Party leaders described Adhikari as the face of BJP’s rise in Bengal politics and credited him for strengthening the party’s organisation across the state.
Grand Swearing-In Ceremony in Kolkata
The swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government will be held tomorrow, 9 May 2026 at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. Several senior BJP leaders and chief ministers from NDA-ruled states are expected to attend the event.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also likely to be present at the ceremony, which the BJP is viewing as a major political moment after its strong electoral performance in Bengal.
With Suvendu Adhikari now set to take charge as chief minister, attention has shifted to the final cabinet list and the direction the new government will take in one of India’s most politically significant states.
