The Significance of Anant Chaturdashi: A Festival of Devotion and Tradition

New Delhi, September 22 (Daily Kiran) : Anant Chaturdashi, observed with great reverence, is dedicated to the worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Devotees perform rituals on this day, seeking happiness, peace, wealth, and prosperity. The festival is rich in traditions that have been passed down through generations, including the unique practice of searching for the deity in a ceremonial offering known as Panchamrit.This festival is closely associated with the religious belief surrounding the churning of the ocean. During the Anant Chaturdashi rituals, devotees bind an idol of Lord Anant in a cucumber and immerse it in a mixture of milk, yogurt, ghee, honey, and sugar, symbolizing the quest for divine grace. This act is deeply rooted in the lore of the ocean churning, where gods and demons collaborated to extract both nectar and poison from the depths. According to tradition, during the churning, the nectar (amrit) was linked to Lord Vishnu, while the poison (vish) was consumed by Lord Shiva.This event marked the beginning of prosperity in the world, establishing a connection between Anant Chaturdashi and the divine protection offered by Lord Vishnu, who is said to have manifested in his eternal form on this day. A distinctive feature of the Anant Chaturdashi celebration is the special thread known as 'Anant,' which is tied with 14 knots. Each knot symbolizes one of Lord Vishnu's 14 forms. During the rituals, devotees chant the names of Vishnu while tying the thread around their arms—men on the right and women on the left.This thread serves as a protective charm against adversities, with the 14 names also linked to 14 realms of existence. Devotees believe that observing the fast and performing the rituals on Anant Chaturdashi can yield rewards for up to 14 years. Historical texts recount that during the Mahabharata era, the Pandavas observed this fast to reclaim their lost kingdom. In numerology, the number 14 is associated with the root number 5, derived from the sum of 1 and 4. This number is linked to the planet Mercury, which is considered the source of intelligence, communication, reasoning, commerce, and calculation.It is said that Lord Krishna first instructed the Pandavas about the significance of this fast, which they observed, leading to its widespread adoption.
