A video showing a woman smoking inside a train compartment has gone viral, igniting fresh debates about smoking in public transport. The footage captures a tense exchange between the woman and a co-passenger who reminds her that smoking inside is prohibited and asks her to step outside.

As the passenger records the incident, the woman notices and confronts him, saying, “You are making a video. This is very wrong. Tell him not to make my video and delete it." The man responds firmly, “Smoking is illegal. Go smoke outside." She fires back, “I am not spending your money to smoke. This is not your train. Go call the police." The heated argument, filmed in an air-conditioned coach, quickly spread across social media platforms.

The official Railway Seva account confirmed that the issue has been referred to the concerned authorities. Meanwhile, online users are calling for strict enforcement and penalties.

This isn’t the first time such behaviour has drawn widespread criticism. The incident brings back memories of the infamous 2022 case involving social media influencer Bobby Kataria. In that case, Kataria was seen reclining in the back of a SpiceJet flight while smoking, a video that reached Union Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. The minister responded firmly, declaring “no tolerance towards such hazardous behaviour."

Later, Kataria claimed that the video showing him smoking was shot inside a dummy aircraft as part of a shoot in Dubai, adding that“The video in which I was seen smoking was a dummy plane and that was a part of my shooting in Dubai. Taking lighter inside the plane is not allowed," according to ANI. However, his statement contradicted SpiceJet’s account of the incident.

SpiceJet confirmed that the incident occurred on January 20, 2022, while passengers were boarding flight SG 706 from Dubai to Delhi. A spokesperson explained that the crew was occupied with boarding and unaware of the situation in the rear rows. The airline learned about the incident on January 24 through social media posts.

At the time, SpiceJet stated that a complaint had been filed with the Gurugram Police, and Kataria was placed on a no-fly list for 15 days in February 2022.

Public smoking inside trains, flights, and other shared spaces remains a recurring issue, raising concerns about health and safety. Despite clear bans, these incidents highlight the challenges of enforcement and passenger responsibility.
