'Youth has awakened': Kejriwal shares video message following detention during Delhi protests
NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal was detained by Delhi Police on Saturday outside his Lodhi Estate residence as he marched towards Jantar Mantar to join a mass demonstration, shortly before releasing a defiant video message on social media declaring that the nation's youth had awakened.
The former Delhi chief minister was taken into custody alongside several prominent political leaders during a widespread police crackdown aimed at preventing a major anti-government protest in the capital. Despite his detention, a video message was posted from his official account on X (formerly Twitter) with a caption, "The youth of the country has awakened."
Talking to media following his detention, Kejriwal urged supporters across India to replicate the Delhi protest site nationwide.
"Turn the entire country into Jantar Mantar," Kejriwal said.
Protests and mass custody
Police forces put Delhi under heavy security restrictions on Saturday morning to block activists and political supporters from gathering at Jantar Mantar. Kejriwal had earlier announced his intention to join the demonstration alongside his family members.
Officers intercepted Kejriwal shortly after he left his home. Reports confirmed that around 5,000 individuals, including student organisers, activists, and key opposition figures, were taken into preventive custody across the national capital.
Social media message
The brief video shared from Kejriwal's account shows public engagement and political gatherings. The post quickly gained traction online, receiving tens of thousands of views within minutes of publication.
"The youth of the country has awakened," Kejriwal stated in the original caption, framing the political movement around youth participation and civic awareness.
The demonstration at Jantar Mantar was organised by political and student groups demanding political accountability and protesting government policy changes. Authorities reacted by closing key traffic points and restricting public transit routes across central Delhi to prevent assemblies, describing the measures as necessary to maintain public order.
