7 Quick Snacks You Can Make With Just Bread and Basic Ingredients

There are days when you open the kitchen cupboard and realise there is very little to work with. No vegetables for a proper meal, no elaborate ingredients and perhaps not enough time to go shopping.

If you have a few slices of bread, however, you still have options.

Bread can be toasted, fried, rolled, seasoned or turned into a quick meal with simple ingredients that are often already sitting in the kitchen. Even basic things such as salt, spices, sugar, butter or an onion can completely change it.

Here are seven easy bread snacks to try when your kitchen looks almost empty.

1. Crispy Masala Bread

This is one of the easiest ways to make plain bread more interesting.

Cut the bread into small pieces and toast them in a pan with a little oil or butter. Add salt, chilli powder, black pepper and a pinch of turmeric if you have them.

If there is an onion available, chop it finely and fry it before adding the bread.

Cook everything until the bread becomes crisp around the edges. You can finish it with fresh coriander if you happen to have some.

2. Bread Upma

Bread upma is a useful recipe when you have leftover bread that is beginning to become dry.

Tear the bread into small pieces. Heat a little oil in a pan and add chopped onion, green chilli and mustard seeds if available.

Add the bread pieces, salt and a little turmeric. Mix everything together and cook for a few minutes.

Even without many vegetables, the combination of toasted bread and spices can make a satisfying snack.

3. Sugar and Butter Toast

When savoury ingredients are unavailable, turn to something sweet.

Spread butter over a slice of bread and toast it in a pan until lightly crisp. Sprinkle a little sugar over the top while it is still warm.

You can add cinnamon or cardamom powder if you have them, but the basic version needs only bread, butter and sugar.

It is simple, quick and particularly comforting with a cup of tea.

4. Bread Pakora Style Toast

You can create a simpler version of bread pakora without preparing a complicated filling.

Make a thick batter using gram flour, water, salt and spices if you have gram flour at home. Cut the bread into halves or triangles and coat each piece lightly with the batter.

Cook in a pan with a little oil until crisp and golden.

If you do not have gram flour, you can simply toast bread with a little oil and spice instead. The idea is to create a crisp, savoury snack without needing many ingredients.

5. Garlic Bread From Basic Ingredients

You do not need a special loaf to make quick garlic bread.

Mix softened butter with finely chopped garlic and a little salt. Spread it over bread slices and toast them in a pan or oven.

Add dried herbs, chilli flakes or black pepper if available.

The edges should become crisp while the centre remains soft. It is an easy snack when you want something savoury but have very few ingredients.

6. Bread Roll With Whatever You Have

A slice of bread can be turned into a simple roll even when you have almost no filling.

Flatten the bread gently with a rolling pin or the palm of your hand. Place a small amount of leftover potato, cooked vegetables, cheese or even a little spiced onion in the centre.

Roll it tightly and toast it in a pan with a little oil or butter.

If there is no filling at all, spread butter, chutney or a little sauce over the bread before rolling it.

7. Spicy Bread Toast

When there is almost nothing in the kitchen, spices can still save the day.

Mix a little oil or butter with salt, chilli powder, black pepper and any other spice you enjoy. Spread the mixture over bread and toast it on both sides.

You can add finely chopped onion or tomato if you have either available.

The result is crunchy, spicy and ready in just a few minutes.

How to Make These Snacks Better

The beauty of basic bread snacks is that you can change them according to whatever happens to be available.

Have an egg? Add it to your toast. Found some leftover cheese? Turn the bread into a cheesy snack. Have a little potato from yesterday's dinner? Use it as a filling.

Even small amounts of ingredients can make a difference.

Use Older Bread Instead of Throwing It Away

Slightly stale bread can actually be useful for many of these recipes. Toasting or cooking it can bring back some of its texture and turn it into something completely different.

However, do not use bread that has visible mould or an unusual smell. Once bread shows signs of spoilage, it should be discarded.

A Nearly Empty Kitchen Can Still Make a Good Snack

You do not always need a long ingredient list to make something enjoyable. Bread, a little fat, some seasoning and a few everyday staples can be enough to create a quick snack.

The next time you think there is nothing to eat at home, check the bread box before reaching for the takeaway menu. You may already have everything you need for a warm, crispy and satisfying bite.
