Agnipath Scheme: First batch to retire next month; what options lie ahead for the 75% of Agniveers?

Newspoint

Agnipath Scheme: This year holds great significance for the first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath scheme. Over the next 2–3 months, it will be determined which Agniveers will remain in the armed forces and which ones will retire after completing their four-year tenure.

Agnipath Scheme: Personnel from the first batch recruited under the Agnipath scheme are now approaching the completion of their four-year service. Reports indicate that the tenure of Agniveers in the Navy and Air Force will conclude in November 2026. Meanwhile, the tenure of the first major batch of Army personnel is expected to end around December 2026 and January 2027.

In this context, the biggest question is what path lies ahead for Agniveers after their four-year service. Under current regulations, up to 25% of Agniveers from each batch can be inducted into the regular cadre based on their merit and performance.

What is the current status regarding the 25% retention?

Currently, there is a provision to retain up to 25% of Agniveers for regular service across the three armed forces. However, there have been reports of discussions within the armed forces regarding increasing this percentage.

According to reports, the Navy seeks a retention rate of up to 75%, while there have been calls to raise it to around 50% for the Army and Air Force; however, these remain mere proposals. The existing rule still mandates the retention of only up to 25% of Agniveers for regular service.

What employment avenues exist for the 75% of Agniveers?

The Central Government has made provisions for various post-service employment options for Agniveers completing their four-year tenure. The most significant changes in this regard have been implemented within the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and the Assam Rifles.

Reservation for Ex-Agniveers: Official Press Release

The Ministry of Home Affairs has made a provision to reserve 50% of vacancies for ex-Agniveers in the recruitment of Constable (GD) and Rifleman, effective July 2026. Ex-Agniveers from the first batch will also receive an additional five-year relaxation in the upper age limit. Furthermore, provisions have been made to exempt them from the Physical Standard Test (PST), Physical Efficiency Test (PET), and the written examination.

Job and Reservation Options in States

In addition to the Centre, several states have also announced reservations or priority for ex-Agniveers in government jobs. For instance, Uttar Pradesh has made a provision for 20% reservation for ex-Agniveers in police and PAC recruitment. Gujarat has also announced a 20% reservation for certain categories of recruitment in the police, prison, and forest departments.

In September 2026, Madhya Pradesh also approved a 20% reservation for ex-Agniveers in uniformed services. This means that for Agniveers completing their four-year service tenure, avenues for employment in CAPFs, the police, and other government sectors will be available alongside opportunities for regular military service.
