Airport Theory: The New Viral Trend That’s Making Travellers Miss Flights

A bold new trend called the " Airport Theory " is going viral on TikTok, sparking intense debates among travellers and travel experts. The premise? Arrive at the airport just 15 minutes before boarding and try to make your flight—cutting it dangerously close for the thrill of it.

Popularized in 2025, the trend follows the heels of 2024’s “raw-dogging” challenge, where fliers skipped entertainment during flights. The Airport Theory, however, plays with real-life stakes: if you’ve checked in online and are carrying only hand luggage, why not rush in last-minute and skip the usual waiting game?

TikToker Michael DiCostanzo attempted the challenge at the ultra-busy Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and clocked in a tight 14 minutes and 57 seconds to reach his gate—thanks to TSA PreCheck and zero checked bags. His Jan 10 video went viral as proof it can be done. But others haven’t been so lucky.

Creator Jenny Kurtz learned the hard way. In her Feb 5 TikTok, she admitted missing her flight to Chicago while trying to beat the clock using the same method.

Experts warn against the trend. Travel advisor Nicole Campoy Jackson told People, “It only takes one stressful missed flight for you to realize this trend is pointlessly risky." She adds that relying on this ‘theory’ is a surefire way to eventually miss a flight.

Jackson emphasized the unpredictability of air travel: long security lines, system delays, or extra checks can all throw off your timing—TSA PreCheck or not. “I have never once arrived early or on time and missed my flight,” she noted, highlighting the importance of planning over adrenaline.
