However, a common piece of advice passed down in many households is to avoid drinking water right after eating a banana. While some dismiss it as a myth, health experts and Ayurvedic principles suggest there may be genuine digestive reasons behind this recommendation.

Bananas are often described as a “cooling” fruit. When you eat one, digestive enzymes and stomach acids immediately begin breaking it down. Drinking water straight afterwards may dilute these digestive juices, potentially slowing the digestive process. As a result, some individuals may experience bloating, heaviness or mild indigestion. This is one of the main reasons behind the advice to avoid drinking water after banana consumption.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, bananas are believed to increase kapha in the body. Consuming cold water immediately after eating a banana may disturb internal balance, particularly in those prone to respiratory sensitivities. Some people report throat irritation, cough or cold-like symptoms when they regularly follow this habit. Although scientific evidence on this point is limited, traditional wisdom continues to influence dietary practices in many households.


Another factor to consider is blood sugar regulation. Bananas contain natural sugars and are rich in fibre. Some health experts suggest that drinking water immediately afterwards may accelerate the absorption of sugars into the bloodstream, possibly causing a temporary spike in blood glucose levels. While this effect may not be significant for everyone, individuals monitoring blood sugar may prefer to be cautious.

In addition, drinking water right after eating fruit may temporarily alter stomach acid balance. This can lead to symptoms such as gas, mild nausea or a feeling of fullness.


Most health practitioners recommend waiting 20–30 minutes after eating fruit before drinking water. If you feel thirsty, it may be better to drink water 10–15 minutes before eating a banana instead.
