Bhumi Satish Pednekkar: This honour tells me that purpose matters and that is encouraging

From choosing socially conscious cinema to championing issues like climate change and sustainability, Bhumi Satish Pednekkar has built a career that extends far beyond the silver screen. The actress who was recently honoured with the Bombay Times Headliners Social Impact Champion award says, “This recognition is very meaningful because it acknowledges something I’ve consciously tried to build throughout my journey — a career with purpose. I’ve always believed that storytelling doesn’t end when the credits roll. As actors, we have the privilege of reaching millions of people, and with that comes a responsibility. That’s why I’ve consciously chosen films like Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Bhakshak, Badhaai Do, Dum Laga Ke Haisha and Sonchiriya, stories that entertain but also start important conversations around sanitation, gender equality, body image, caste, justice and inclusion. Beyond cinema, my work as the UNDP National Advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals has allowed me to engage directly with communities across India and understand how interconnected these issues really are.”

Elaborating on why this aspect of her life is important, she explains, “Awards for acting will always be cherished, but being recognised for trying to create a positive impact beyond cinema is a different kind of fulfilment. I’m grateful that Bombay Times has recognised that journey.”
