CNG Becomes Costlier by ₹4.45; What Is the New Price?
This price hike, coming just before the festive season, serves as a major blow to the general public. The company had previously increased CNG prices on August 1st as well.
With Diwali approaching, drivers and the general public in Ahmedabad have been hit by another wave of inflation. Adani Gas has suddenly raised the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) by ₹4.45 per kilogram. During the festive season, when people are busy planning shopping trips and outings, this price increase will particularly impact the pockets of auto-rickshaw drivers and those who rely on daily earnings from driving.
In August 2024, the company had also raised prices by ₹4 per kilogram, pushing the cost of CNG to ₹94.20 per kilogram. Now, with this latest increase of ₹4.45, the price of Adani CNG in Ahmedabad has reached ₹98.47 per kilogram.
Resentment Among Auto-Rickshaw Drivers
There is significant resentment and anger, especially among auto-rickshaw drivers, due to the continuous rise in gas prices. They argue that while gas prices are climbing steadily and substantially, the Transport Commissioner has not approved a corresponding, adequate increase in rickshaw fares. In the past, rickshaw drivers have even gone on strike to protest against fare structures and the rise of online cab/rickshaw-hailing applications. Consequently, this latest price hike—occurring right around Diwali—has completely disrupted the household budgets of auto-rickshaw drivers and other motorists.
Why Were Prices Suddenly Increased?
Addressing the hike in CNG prices, a spokesperson for ATGL stated that the move became necessary due to a sharp rise in the procurement cost of natural gas. The company stated that costs have risen due to a surge in global gas prices, driven by factors such as low availability of domestic gas, supply cuts, and geopolitical tensions.
A spokesperson said, "Despite these challenges, ATGL is making every effort to minimize the impact on consumers. At the same time, the company is ensuring that the supply of CNG—an affordable and eco-friendly fuel option—continues without any interruption."
