Common childhood virus found to play a hidden role in bladder cancer development: Study
Many health conditions that appear in adulthood can sometimes be traced back to infections acquired early in life. One example gaining scientific attention is the BK virus, a common childhood infection that typically causes mild, flu-like symptoms before becoming permanently dormant in the urinary tract. Research published in Science Advances by Dr Simon Baker and colleagues at the University of York has highlighted how this virus, present in most people since childhood, may cause specific DNA damage that increases the risk of bladder cancer years or even decades later. After the initial infection, the virus settles quietly in the kidney, bladder, and ureter, where it remains inactive in individuals with strong immunity. However, when the immune system becomes weakened, such as during chronic illness or after organ transplantation, the virus can reactivate. The newly identified DNA damage linked to this reactivation offers important clues about how bladder cancer may develop even when tumours show no remaining trace of the virus.
