How to Prepare Crispy Onion Rings Without Deep Frying

Onion rings are a popular snack loved for their crunchy coating and soft, mildly sweet centre. However, traditional recipes usually involve deep frying, which requires a considerable amount of oil. The good news is that you can prepare deliciously crispy onion rings at home using an air fryer or a regular oven. With the right coating, seasoning and cooking technique, they can develop a golden exterior without being submerged in hot oil. This easy recipe uses everyday kitchen ingredients and is suitable for serving as an evening snack, party appetiser or side dish with homemade dips.

Ingredients Required

  • 2 large onions
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup cornflour
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ½ teaspoon red chilli powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper powder
  • ½ teaspoon dried mixed herbs
  • Salt to taste
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • A little cooking oil spray or oil for brushing

Step 1: Prepare the Onion Rings

Peel the onions and cut them into thick, round slices of approximately half a centimetre. Separate the slices carefully into individual rings.

Choose large onions for evenly sized rings. Pat them dry with a kitchen towel to remove excess moisture, as wet onions can make the coating less crisp.

Step 2: Prepare the Coating Mixture

Take all-purpose flour, cornflour, red chilli powder, garlic powder, black pepper, dried herbs and salt in a bowl. Mix the ingredients thoroughly.

Cornflour helps create a lighter, crispier coating, while the seasonings add flavour. Keep the breadcrumbs in a separate bowl for the final coating.

Step 3: Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the dry flour mixture, making sure it is covered on all sides. Next, dip it into the milk and allow the excess liquid to drip off.

Roll the ring in breadcrumbs until it is evenly coated. Press the crumbs gently so they stick properly. For a thicker crust, repeat the milk and breadcrumb coating once more.

Step 4: Cook the Onion Rings in an Air Fryer

Preheat the air fryer to 190°C for around three minutes. Arrange the coated onion rings in a single layer in the basket, leaving enough space between them.

Lightly spray or brush the rings with oil. Air fry for approximately 8–12 minutes, turning them halfway through cooking. The exact time may vary depending on the thickness of the rings and your appliance.

Remove them once the coating looks golden and crisp.

Step 5: Prepare Them in a Regular Oven

If you do not have an air fryer, you can use a conventional oven. Preheat it to 200°C and line a baking tray with parchment paper.

Arrange the coated onion rings on the tray without overlapping them. Brush or spray a little oil over the surface and bake for approximately 15–20 minutes, turning them halfway through.

Keep an eye on the rings towards the end, as cooking times can vary between ovens.

Tips to Make Onion Rings Extra Crispy

  • Cut the onions into evenly sized rings for consistent cooking.
  • Remove excess moisture before applying the coating.
  • Use panko breadcrumbs for a lighter, crunchier texture.
  • Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket or baking tray.
  • Apply a light coating of oil to help the breadcrumbs turn golden.
  • Serve immediately after cooking to enjoy the best texture.
