Dhurandhar: Ranveer Singh's Film Sparks Debate Over Violence in Cinema
The upcoming film Dhurandhar, featuring Ranveer Singh, has become a trending topic as its theatrical release approaches. The action-filled trailer of this spy thriller has garnered significant attention, although some social media users have voiced concerns regarding the film's graphic violence.
In light of the varied responses, director Suparn S Varma, who is currently enjoying the success of his recent project HAQ, addressed the backlash.
During the 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2025 in Goa, Varma characterized the audience's reactions as a "double standard" regarding violent films. He pointed out that while international films depicting violence often receive acclaim, similar recognition is frequently lacking for Hindi films, even when the narrative calls for it.
Director's Perspective on Cinematic Violence
Varma stated, "When a film like Marco is released, the violence is celebrated. We see this with Indonesian films like The Raid 1 and 2, or in Korean and Japanese cinema, as well as Hollywood. Violence has been a part of storytelling for ages, and when done artistically, it can be beautiful. So, if the plot necessitates it, what's the issue? If a character is torturing someone, it's my responsibility as a filmmaker to depict that creatively. This is the essence of the genre I'm working in," he elaborated.
He emphasized the need for audiences who appreciate cinema from all cultures and urged that filmmakers should not be evaluated through different standards based on the films they create. "We should celebrate Hindi films for their unique qualities and support our filmmakers. It's crucial that we approach cinema with a passion that transcends language barriers," he added.
Dhurandhar's Star-Studded Cast and Musical Tribute
Dhurandhar, which is directed, written, and produced by Aditya Dhar, features a stellar cast including Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, R. Madhavan, and Akshaye Khanna. The film is set to hit theaters on December 5.
In the meantime, Suparn S. Varma's latest film HAQ, starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, has received widespread acclaim. This courtroom drama, inspired by the true story of Shah Bano Begum, was also showcased at the prestigious 56th International Film Festival of India on November 22 in Goa.
Additionally, Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar pays homage to one of Hindi cinema's cherished qawwalis, Na To Karavan Ki Talash Hai. The trailer, produced by Jio Studios and B62 Studios, has generated excitement not only for its impressive cast but also for this nostalgic musical element. As the trailer approaches its climax, the familiar qawwali resonates, captivating both cinephiles and music enthusiasts alike. The revival of this classic from the 1960 film Barsaat Ki Raat has sparked a flurry of social media posts celebrating its return.
