Does the Baby Open Its Eyes in the Womb?

Newspoint
Yes, a baby opens its eyes in the womb, usually between 26 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. Until then, the eyelids stay fused shut to protect the developing eyes. Once they separate, the eyes can open and close, and from about 31 weeks, the pupils respond to light. This does not mean vision is fully developed. The womb is dim, the baby’s sight stays blurry, and the visual system continues to develop through the rest of pregnancy and for about a year after birth.

When Do Babies Open Their Eyes in the Womb? The baby's eyes generally start opening between26 and 28 weeks of pregnancy. Some babies may open them earlier or later.

The eyes start as two small outgrowths of the developing brain. By the end of the first trimester, the eyelids have formed and fused shut. This seal protects the delicate eye while it grows.

  • Week 4: The eyes begin to form.
  • First trimester: The eyelids fuse shut.
  • Week 14: Eye movements appear on 2D ultrasound.
  • Weeks 26 to 28: The eyelids separate, and the eyes open and close.
  • Week 31: The pupils constrict and widen in response to light.
By about 28 weeks, babies can open their eyes and sense differences in light and darkness.

Can a Baby See Light in the Womb?Although the womb is dim, some light can reach the uterus through the mother's abdominal tissues. As the baby's visual system develops, the baby can respond to changes in light.

However, seeing light in the womb is different from seeing objects clearly. There is not enough light or visual detail for a foetus to have the kind of focused vision a newborn or older child has.

In a 2017 study, researchers tracked foetuses in the third trimester using 4D ultrasound. They moved two light patterns across each mother’s abdomen: three dots arranged like a face (two eyes and a mouth) and three dots arranged as an upright triangle. The foetuses turned their heads toward the face-like pattern more often.

Does the Baby Sleep With its Eyes Closed in the Womb? Most of the time, the baby's eyes will be closed during sleep. As pregnancy advances, babies develop periods of sleep and wakefulness, and their eye movements become more organised.

The baby may therefore open its eyes for short periods and then close them again, much like the changing sleep and wake states seen after birth.

Eye Health in Pregnancy: Vitamin A and the Indian DietVitamin A deficiency remains a public health problem in India. Night blindness in pregnant women is more common in the later months. A studyfrom South India linked maternal night blindness with low birthweight in newborns.

Foods rich in vitamin A include:

  • Green leafy vegetables such as spinach and methi
  • Carrots, papaya and mango
  • Eggs and whole milk
Take vitamin A supplementsonly as your doctor prescribes. Excess vitamin A can harm the baby.

Does an Eclipse Harm a Baby's Eyes? Many families advise pregnant women to stay indoors during an eclipse, avoid sharp objects, or skip meals. No evidence shows that an eclipse harms an unborn baby's eyes or causes birth defects. Doctors also advise against long gaps without food or water during pregnancy.

The risk is looking at the sun during a solar eclipse without proper glasses. This damages the eyes of anyone, including the mother. A lunar eclipse is safe to view with the naked eye.

Babies can open their eyes and blink in the womb, usually from around 26–28 weeks, but their ability to see clearly develops gradually before and after birth.
