Dumbo octopus: The bizarre deep-sea creature with elephant-like fins that hunts in darkness nearly 7,000 metres down

Deep beneath the ocean surface, where sunlight disappears and pressure reaches levels that would crush most familiar animals, lives an octopus that looks almost unreal. The Dumbo octopus , which belongs to a group of deep-sea cephalopods in the genus Grimpoteuthis , is named for the large fins on its head-like mantle that resemble the ears of Disney’s Dumbo.
