Targeting the 'Undruggable' KRAS Protein

For decades, medical researchers faced a massive hurdle in treating pancreatic cancer: more than 90 percent of cases are driven by mutations in the RAS gene family, specifically the KRAS protein, which regulates uncontrolled tumor cell growth. Because of its complex structure, this protein was long considered "undruggable."

Doubling Patient Survival Time With Fewer Side Effects

Clinical evaluation of the drug included roughly 500 patients whose metastatic cancer had stopped responding to prior lines of treatment. Patients were divided between receiving the new medication or standard chemotherapy.

The results were remarkable, showing that patients taking Rasonc experienced nearly double the survival time compared to those on chemotherapy, along with significantly fewer severe side effects than traditional toxic treatments. While priced at approximately $39,800 (around Rs 3.3 million) per month and administered as a daily pill, the medication marks a historic turning point in oncology.

Paving the Way for Future Cancer Treatments

According to the American Cancer Society, tens of thousands of new pancreatic cancer cases are diagnosed annually, carrying a low five-year survival rate that underscores the urgency of new therapies. Medical experts are optimistic that Rasonc's successful approval will open entirely new avenues for treating other stubborn malignancies. Revolution Medicines is already actively testing this groundbreaking technology on lung cancer and several other cancer types, signaling a revolutionary shift in targeted cancer care.
