Gu to Ru: The Guru Who Turns Darkness Into Light

Newspoint
Suffering exists because life is lived in the darkness of ignorance. The belief that God lives somewhere in the sky, the fear that death is an ending, the failure to ask who one truly is — all of this is what school teaches, and it is also what keeps one a fool. A Guru is needed to unlearn what has been wrongly learned.

The Meaning of Gu and RuThe word Guru comes from Gu, darkness, and Ru, light. A Guru is the one who lifts a seeker out of the darkness of ignorance and into the light of truth, dissolving the misery created by the mind and the agony created by the ego. The mind creates fear, worry, stress, anxiety, regret, shame and guilt; the ego creates anger, hatred, revenge, jealousy, pride, greed and selfishness. These miseries cannot be overcome alone. An Enlightened Master, one who Awakens a seeker to Self-Realization and God-Realization, is the only way out — without which suffering continues not just in this life but through repeated rebirths.

A Beacon in the FogA Gurufunctions like a lighthouse, that bright tower whose beam warns ships of hazards long before they strike. Most people live and die without ever asking why, mistaking the body, the mind and the ego for the Self, and suffering as a result. No amount of modern information, however freely available, can perform this work — information can be gathered anywhere, but only a true Guru converts it into Realization. A Guru must therefore be Enlightened, not merely knowledgeable, since knowledge alone cannot Awaken anyone. Such a Master seeks nothing from a disciple except sincerity and offers in return the rare gift of seeing a seeker through and through.

The Journey of InitiationThe journey truly begins with Initiation, not a whispered Mantra but a mutual commitment between Guru and disciple to walk the path together. What follows is a Talaash, a spiritual quest , undertaken step by step, chipping away at the rock of ignorance until the truth hidden within is revealed. This is the toughest task in existence, for it is easier to Awaken a willing seeker than to convince the unaware that they are asleep at all. Good Karma alone brings only another birth, never Liberation — that requires the Guru's light. Once ignorance is dissolved layer by layer, the seeker recognizes what was always true: not the body, not the mind, not the ego, but the Divine Spirit appearing as a human being. This Realization is Enlightenment , the only true purpose of human birth, and the light that a Guru alone can kindle to carry a seeker from Gu to Ru, from darkness to light.
