How Khushbu Sundar lost 40 kg: Knee pain made stairs difficult, but fear of high BP and diabetes pushed her to change her lifestyle
Actor Khushbu Sundar ’s 40- kg weight loss : Knee pain once made stairs difficult, then this surprising change transformed her weight-loss journey
At one point, climbing a flight of stairs was enough to make Khushbu Sundar’s knees hurt. Running was difficult. Even walking could become uncomfortable.
The actor, now 55, has revealed that she was once 98.6 kg, and her doctor eventually told her to lose weight, not simply for appearance, but to ease the pressure on her knees.

What happened next was not a crash diet or a dramatic few-month transformation.
It took almost five years for her to lose 40 kg.
In an interview with the Cinema Express she said that she was concerned about high blood pressure and blood sugar, two health issues her mother had. She said in the interview that she already has migraine and sinus and would not want to develop hypertension and blood sugar hereditarily. “It is important to maintain the ideal body weight for your age. I am 55 and do not have high blood pressure or diabetes. However, my mother has high blood pressure. So, there is a high risk that I have it. I have already ‘inherited’ migraine and sinus issues from my parents, and I was determined not to get high blood pressure,” she told the same in another interview with Onmanorama.
The stairs were the warning signImagine carrying extra weight while already dealing with injured knees from years of shooting.
That was the situation Sundar described in a recent interview with Kumudam Online.
“I was 98.6 kgs. With slightly over 1.5 kgs, I would have hit a century,” she said.
“I had knee problems because of injuries during shoots. If I climbed a flight of stairs, my knees would hurt. I couldn’t run or walk,” Sundar said.
Her doctor advised her to lose weight to reduce the knee pain. Sundar says she began her weight-loss journey in 2021.
Her transformation had another unusual detail
Then she discovered that she had gluten intolerance. “I had inflammation….so no chapati, no maida,” she said. Her explanation is personal, though, and it should not be interpreted as proof that removing gluten causes weight loss in people who do not have celiac disease, gluten sensitivity or another medically established reason to avoid it.
That detail makes her story more complicated than the familiar celebrity weight-loss formula of “eat less and exercise more.”
Her own experience suggested that finding a sustainable routine also meant understanding what her body tolerated.
For Sundar, the original goal was much simpler: to move without the pain that had once made a flight of stairs feel difficult.
