A song can last between six and 35 minutes, while an individual whale has been recorded singing for up to 22 hours through repetition. Bowhead songs are slightly less complex but show shared patterns that change seasonally. Blue whale songs last about one minute and can remain stable for more than two decades. Fin whale song is simpler, consisting of short frequency-modulated pulses around 20 Hz. Minke whales produce repetitive calls known as boings.


How far can whales be heard across the ocean
Whale songs can travel remarkably far underwater. Fin and blue whales can produce source pressure levels of up to 188 decibels using the underwater reference of one micropascal. Sound also travels more effectively underwater than in air. As a result, songs from smaller whales can be heard at least ten kilometres away. Blue whale songs can travel much farther. They have been detected more than 1,000 kilometres from the singer using bottom-mounted hydrophone arrays. These recordings were designed for submarine detection but became useful to biologists.


Song plays a key role in humpback mating
Whale song may serve several purposes. On humpback breeding grounds, singing appears to have the strongest effect on other males. Singing males tend to stay farther apart, while males may approach or even attack nearby singers. This suggests that song may help keep rivals away and could also help form or maintain relationships between males. During migration, singers seek out females and sing more when they join them. On wintering grounds, female choice may play a greater role in mating decisions.
