I'm exploring different films to avoid being typecast: Mirnaa
Mirnaa is playing by her own rules in an industry that often likes to put actors in boxes. The actress talks to us about returning as Rajinikanth 's daughter-in-law in Jailer 2 , meeting childhood crush Hrithik Roshan , dealing with criticisms and more. Excerpts from a Conversation:
IN THE SEQUEL, MY ROLE WAS MORE INTENSE
The actress is grateful that Jailer 2 is continuing the success of its predecessor. I've been travelling with this team for almost four years now. The first part was a hit, and now the sec ond part has also become a huge hit. In the sequel, my role could have been envisioned any which way, but the director (Nelson) gave her an arc"

'I had a major crush on Hrithik during my childhood'
Mirnaa lights up while talking about Hrithik Roshan, whom she has admired since childhood. "He's incredibly handsome, dances well, fights well and performs brilliantly. I had a major crush on him during my childhood. I grew up watching him, but he still looks the same as he did when I was in school. He hasn't changed at all, not even slightly, and I also conveyed this to him."
Recalling how she came on board for Jailer 2, Mirnaa states, "I knew there were internal discussions, and when I asked the director about it, he said he was writing part two. But I didn't ask him whether I was a part of it because I knew he'd tell me if I was. I eventually got the call from the produc- tion house. My role was also more intense this time."
'I DON'T WANT TO DO TOO MANY FILMS JUST FOR THE SAKE OF IT'
Mirnaa says she does not want to take up projects simply because she has free time. "I don't want to do too many films just for the sake of it. Earlier, when other people managed my dates, they'd tell me, 'Since you are free next month, let's give your dates to this project.' But I'm fine even if I'm not doing any films. When I don't want to do a film and then I'm put in a place where I have to, I'll go on to regret it. If someone asks about my filmography, I want to tell them about all the films I have done and not skip a few because I'm not happy with them. It's not that I'm particularly picky. The choice comes down to whether I want to do a film or not."
'I REALISED IF I KEPT GETTING HURT, I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO SURVIVE HERE'
Mirnaa believes that being in the public eye requires one to develop a thick skin. "When you're a public figure, people will comment, instruct and offer advice. But it's your responsibility to decide what you want to take in. I worked as a developer in IT and quit my job for cinema. Even in a corporate job, you face criticism, but it's a very different world. When I entered the industry, I took everything personally, and it hurt me. At some point, I realised that if I kept getting hurt, I wouldn't be able to survive here. I love cinema because it's a freelance profession. If I like a character, I'll take it. If I want to take a three-month break, I won't sign any films. It's my life, my rules. I like the uncertainty of it."
On Superstar
Mirnaa says her onscreen father- in-law Rajinikanth continues to leave her in awe. "I can't use any other word for him other than Superstar," she says. "Everything about him is special. I don't know what someone else should even do to reach the place in which he is. I admire him."
On her upcoming projects...
Mirnaa is currently juggling multiple projects, including director Muthaiya's Irulan, starring Arun Vijay, Ameer's political drama centred on caste politics, titled Iraivan Miga Periyavan, Telugu film Don't Bosko and her first Malayalam film in six years, which she describes as a fun romcom. The actress reveals she has been consciously taking up varied projects to avoid being typecast. "When you do a commercial film, people tend to think you only do commercial films. So, they keep calling you for similar roles where you come, dance, be with the hero, romance and go. That's why I explored different films belonging to diverse scales. If you look at the roles I've played, you won't see the same girl every time," she says.
