In 1994, Damon Dash co-founded Roc-A-Fella Records; decades later, the former hip-hop mogul's life story rights sell for $550,000 amid $25 million debt crisis
Dash filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Florida in September 2025. According to documents reported by the Los Angeles Times, he listed liabilities of approximately $25.3 million against personal assets worth just $4,350. His filing also reported no monthly income.
A large part of the debt involved unpaid taxes and other government obligations. The filing listed around $19.1 million owed to government entities, along with domestic support obligations and money owed in connection with legal disputes.

The bankruptcy case allows a court-appointed trustee to identify and sell eligible assets to help repay creditors. Trustee Traci K. Stevenson argued that Dash’s life rights had commercial value because of his public profile and his association with Roc-A-Fella Records and Jay-Z.
The trustee also noted that Dash had not included these rights in his original bankruptcy asset disclosures. The proposed sale was subsequently approved to proceed to auction, with the proceeds earmarked for creditors.
Dash’s legal team has challenged parts of the saleAlthough the auction has produced a winning bid, Dash’s legal team has raised objections to the terms. Complex reported on October 23 that his attorney, Mark S. Roher, filed an objection seeking specific protections for the entrepreneur.
Among other things, the attorney asked that assets Dash acquired after his September 2025 bankruptcy filing be excluded from the transaction. He also sought assurances that Dash would not be required to communicate with, assist or participate in projects made by the buyer.
Another concern involved Dash’s unrecorded memories, experiences and thoughts. His lawyer argued that these should not automatically become part of the property transferred to the purchaser.
These objections are significant because selling life-story rights does not necessarily settle every question about a person’s future involvement in a film or documentary. The final scope of the transaction and the protections available to Dash remain important issues in the court proceedings.
From building Roc-A-Fella Records to selling his life rightsDash rose to prominence as a music executive and entrepreneur after co-founding Roc-A-Fella Records in 1994 with Jay-Z and Kareem “Biggs” Burke. The label became a major force in hip-hop and helped establish Jay-Z as one of the genre’s leading artists.
