India’s #1 Travel Search In 2025 Surprises Everyone And It’s Not Hills Or Beaches
Travel in 2025 has reached new heights, with Indians increasingly seeking meaningful experiences over mere sightseeing. Scroll through social media, and it seems like everyone is on a journey to explore the world. As the year comes to a close, Google’s India Year in Search 2025 report offers a fascinating glimpse into Indian travellers’ evolving interests.
While beaches, mountains, and luxury staycations have always been popular, 2025 saw a clear shift toward spiritual tourism. And the crown for India’s most-searched travel destination? The Maha Kumbh Mela, an event that occurs only once every 144 years.
The Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 became a landmark moment for Indian travel. Not only did it top Google’s Trending Travel Searches 2025 list, but it also featured among the most searched News Events and overall trending searches. Its influence transcended age, drawing younger generations closer to India’s spiritual heritage.
Dr Vikram Kamat, chairman and managing director of The VITS Kamats Group, told India Today, “Earlier, spiritual tourism was seen as something primarily for the elderly. But the 2025 Maha Kumbh has attracted younger generations, who are now forging a lifelong bond with India’s spiritual traditions.”
The event also encouraged visits to destinations like Varanasi, Rishikesh, and Bodh Gaya. With enhanced digital platforms and guided tours, these experiences became more accessible to international visitors as well. Somnath, another renowned pilgrimage site, secured the ninth spot in India’s trending travel searches.
While spiritual destinations dominated, beach and island getaways remained popular. Searches for Philippines (2nd), Phu Quoc, Vietnam (6th), Phuket, Thailand (7th), and the Maldives (8th) reflected the ongoing allure of tropical escapes.
Georgia, with its scenic landscapes, historical monasteries, charming European-style streets, and rich culinary heritage, claimed the third spot. Domestic favourites like Kashmir (5th) and Pondicherry (10th) also made the list, showing that both international and homegrown destinations continue to attract attention.
Interestingly, Georgia and Kashmir maintained their popularity from 2024, proving that certain destinations remain perennial favourites for Indian travellers.
The 2025 trends highlight how Indian travellers are blending spirituality, culture, and leisure in their journeys—making travel more than just a holiday, but a pursuit of experiences and meaningful connections.
